This week, I decided to give up something for Lent for the first time. Lent started Wednesday (Ash Wednesday) and lasts 40 days (excluding Sundays) until Easter. Why? Well, first of all, I had been a little off of my training and nutrition goals. I tend to be super driven by goals, which is a blessing and a curse. I will go at something with everything I have to reach a goal, but if I realize at any point that I'm not reaching it (ie if I take a day off of training) it's about a million times harder to motivate myself to keep striving to reach that goal. I was at one of those "I-don't-want-to-be-motivated-to-run" moments...so Lent seemed like the perfect time to start over. I gave up laziness and fried/sugary/bad-for-me foods. Then came this question at the lunch table: "How committed to this are you?"
Hmm... My instant response was, "Not very. Not very committed at all." Hmmm...red flag. So I've changed my mind. I've decided to be very committed to it. I never want to be semi-committed to anything that I decide to do. I'd much rather run at it with everything I have, and if I don't quite meet the mark, at least I went for it and wasn't just a little committed to it. So, I'm committed to observing Lent... and I'm committed to being committed.
